About the Artist

Lyubov Duma is a contemporary Ukrainian artist whose work bridges Ukraine's rich artistic heritage and contemporary painting through a visual language uniquely her own.

She was born and raised in Bukovyna, a historic region in western Ukraine at the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains. Her hometown of Chernivtsi has long been a meeting place of cultures, where Ukrainian, Romanian, Jewish, Polish, German, and Austrian traditions have coexisted for centuries. Growing up in this culturally diverse environment, surrounded by the folk traditions of Bukovyna, nurtured her appreciation for ornament, color, craftsmanship, and decorative art from an early age.

Before dedicating herself to painting, Duma spent more than a decade working as a journalist in print media and television in Ukraine. Producing documentaries and social programs shaped her visual thinking, teaching her to tell stories through composition, light, rhythm, color, and human emotion. Although the camera was eventually replaced by a paintbrush, her desire to tell meaningful stories has remained unchanged.

An important source of inspiration in Duma's work is the tradition of Petrykivka painting - Ukraine's distinctive decorative art form, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Rather than treating it as a style to be replicated, she approaches it as a living visual language that continues to evolve. Her paintings are not contemporary interpretations of Petrykivka, but original works that carry its spirit into a modern artistic context.

Flowers, birds, and botanical forms in her paintings are never literal representations of nature. Instead, they become expressions of memory, hope, resilience, and human emotion. Every painting begins with a feeling, gradually taking shape through color, movement, and composition.

Each artwork is painted entirely by hand. By combining traditional craftsmanship with a contemporary artistic vision, Lyubov Duma creates paintings that feel both timeless and deeply connected to the present.

Her work has been exhibited at the Charlotte International Arts Festival (2024, 2025), the Art Frenzy Exhibition, and charitable art initiatives including the I Am Your Neighbor Art Auction and the FIЇNKA Charity Auction in the United States. Today, her work is held in private collections throughout the United States and Europe.
